I read an interesting article the other week about how to increase your blog readership. The main advice that seemed to be given was to tart yourself round more popular bloggers sites. Make a comment here, a comment there, and watch as people come over to your blog and reciprocate. Maybe actively ask a popular blogger to "link" to you. Do a bit of whoring.
Hmmm. Something about that didn't sit well with me.
I made the point on the forum that whilst I welcome all and every reader I could get, I didn't just want to have other bloggers reading me, and commenting so that I would rush over and give them back a comment like a piece of currency.
Surely good writing didn't need to be tarted out and readers (both bloggers and non-bloggers) would come naturally if the content was good enough. I was called naive. Am I? What do you all think, is networking the only way to get a readership?

Naive is a bit harsh...
But the general premise is correct--networking is key. There's so much content out there that you need to do everything in your power to draw readers to your site. If you approach blogging with the "if you build it, they will come" mentality, you'll spend your time blogging for the same 10 people in your immediate circle of family and friends. Spread the word, create a buzz, and give people a reason to check out your site. Once you get them there, the content is what will keep them. But you can't expect word of mouth to happen of its own volition--part of that definitely comes from you playing an active role in promoting your own work.
It's not whoring; it's treating your blog like a novelist treats a book--you need the book reviews, the book signings, the media interviews, etc, to generate sales. Getting the book on the shelves is only the first step.

Makes sense to me
I think networking is probably the way to go, as long as you stick to relevant sites that you actually have an interest in. I don't think there's anything wrong with attracting a preponderance of bloggers either, since we're probably the ones most likely to read blogs in the first place. So I say, self-promote away! I wish it was something I was better at.
