"Blame the Woman" Remains the World's Motto Regarding Rape

During orientation week my freshman year of college, I attended one of those well-intentioned-but-usually-cheesy workshops on “college life.� I don’t remember how the topic surfaced, but date rape was an issue that the group discussed. One woman from Tennessee said, “There’s no such thing as date rape. If you turn on a stove, you are going to get burned.� My mouth must have dropped to the floor. I was not exactly raised in a cave of feminist isolation, but I could not believe that a woman would make such an outrageous statement in that day and age (i.e. -1994) in the good old US of A. “Uh, excuse me,� I interjected. “But I do believe that you can turn off the stove once the water starts boiling. The pot does not have to boil over.�
