Sarah Palin?! OMG!

MCCAIN'S OFFICE CONFIRMS!

Okay, so I lost ten bucks on Joe Lieberman, BUT WHAT A WAY TO LOSE TEN BUCKS!!! I don't even have pants on and I am running around blogging because I AM SO EXCITED OMG PLEASE LET THIS NOT BE A HEAD FAKE OMG. I have resisted blogging on the whole McCain Veep thing because they kept faking everyone out and telling us that this guy was clearing his schedule and this guy had the Secret Service creeping out and NOW there's a CHARTERED JET that is landing from ALASKA and OMG SARAH PALIN OMGOMGOMGOMG!

P.S. If this is not a head fake (they are saying she's still in Dayton), and it had BETTER NOT BE, that ten bucks is being donated to McCain's campaign.

P.P.S. I now have pants on.

P.P.P.S. On the train, I got a message that it was Lindsay Graham, and I almost threw up AND broke the "no f-word on a blog rule."

P.P.P.S. CNBC is confirming...I think. At this point, anything else would be a disappointment.

P.P.P.P.S. I'm hearing more confirmations, and that the only person who was saying she was still in Alaska was her spokeswoman. Now, Palin's staff is saying they don't know WHERE she is! LOL!

Major props to the McCain campaign for stealing Obama's morning after glow. CNN is practically choking on their desire to keep it all Obama all the time.

P.P.P.P.P.S. Palin's parents were told to wait by the radio...how adorable!

Okay, I'm done with the PS'es...A gun toting pro-lifer...hilarious. She's not a run of the mill pro-lifer, though. She's a feminist for life, so honestly, she's about making abortion unnecessary, which is right in line with me. I have to admit. I have a girl-crush at the moment.

* She takes the stage in 20 minutes....

Okay, now that I've calmed down, I can write normally again. I am just so excited. I called Sarah at the start of the campaign, and I am so glad to have her on board. My office just took down our Bob Barr hat and I joined my first Palin-centric Facebook group.

Why do I like her? She's young, she's vivacious...five kids (one in the army who enlisted on 9/11 and one with Downs Syndrome), and she's not just a solid conservative, but she lives it...and she's cool. Most of all, though, she's strong on energy policy, not just because she's experienced with it, but because she lives with energy policy every day of her life, being the governor of Alaska. She's not experienced the way some choices would be, but she's more experienced than Obama and he's running for the top office, and as far as foreign policy is concerned, very few people can say that they lived within a hairsbreadth of being Russian or Canadian every day of their life. I do like that she's young (a clear contrast to McCain), beautiful and that she's a Washington outsider. Now, the only ticket with two insiders is the Obama-Biden ticket.

I have to hand it to McCain. CNN and others were choking on the story, trying desperately to hang on to last nights Obama b-roll.
Whoever McCain had picked, he did a fantastic job with PR and I'm impressed. I still don't like him, but I am with Sarah all the way.

Also cool...Geraldine Ferraro just praised her on Fox. :)

Okay, guys...I have to get work done today, but its been fun. I'll see you all later with my take on the DNC and HOPEFULLY I'll see you all next week with an interview with Sarah.

Be well, BlogHers!

Morning Glow Still Here!

Even at 2100.  Nothing can dim my rosy left wing outlook.

However, I will not bash McCain for his choice.  The fact that she is a woman makes her good enough in my book.  It's like when the Tigers and the Chargers met at the World Series.  Either way,  I win.

Hoping for Obama but willing to go with the flow.

Always in trouble...

Question

Pam - you write, "The fact that she is a woman makes her good enough in my book. "

Just curious - were you okay with that when women who were choosing Hillary said that? Or if African-Americans say they chose Barack Obama just for his blackness? I am not familiar with how you felt in the primaries etc - so I'm asking sincerely.

For me - that is not a reason to vote for someone - but I do understand how the women I met who said that about Clinton felt - I just don't choose that way, but I understand that others do - I do not mean to judge - I want to flesh out. Thanks.

If you vote for Palin, you'll get McCain and 100 more years in Iraq.

Why, what is wrong with you all?

I am a Republican but I can't vote for this woman. Electing her would be telling my daughter that marriage doesn't matter, God's teachings don't matter. And if she can't run her family why do people think she can run the country? This is a disappointment, a HUGE disappointment. Don't my fellow republicans understand what a mistake this is, the kind of role model this will be for our daughters? What this will do to marriage? We might as well legalize gay marriage because apparently nothing is sacred to us anymore except getting our team elected. I'm on God's team, not this one and usually I'd go Republican because of the values they share but that is no longer the case.

Cannot stand the suspense...

...seriously.  Just can't stand it.  Am SO hopeful he's made this excellent choice.

Change?

A Gun-toting Pro-lifer? Sounds pretty typical GOP to me...

Hats off to John McCain if he indeed is putting a woman on his ticket. Nice strides there.

However, she's still entirely opposite on the issues I vote.

This had to be his choice ...

... It just made sense given the current political landscape. AND, now the media is talking about this and NOT Obama's speech last nite.

Crazy like a bunch of foxes.

right!

washy || http://washwords.com/words || washwords.dc@gmail.com

umm, i gotta side with Erin here. I'm trying to stay non-partisan as possible, former journalist and gov. employee and all, but this choice is making it hard.

or rather the spin around it is ... i'm sorry maybe it's something in my background / cynical personality but I feel insulted as a woman and a thinking person. it just seems soooo "hey, girls, here's a woman, that's what you wanted right?" who cares if she's pro-life, evangelical, wants to teach creationism in the schools, has no experience, wants to leave her five-month old to campaign, put her pals on the board when they had a policy she didn't like, etc. etc.

Hey, I agree she seems like a nice lady and kudos to her for keeping her baby "even though she KNEW it was going to be handicapped!" gasssp.

but she's no hillary clinton and she doesn't stand for the issues I as a woman, thinking person, democrat, etc etc. stand for. all i'm hoping is that all of you my fellow women look carefully - I know you will, rather than anyone leaping for joy because she's a woman.

and as for the orignal poster, your enthusiasm is infectious and fun. umm did you work for "sarah"? I'm just wondering what we're missing. here in dc my female colleagues and i couldn't be madder or more concerned.

"I as a woman, thinking person"

Are you implying that if we do agree with Palin's politics we are NOT thinking persons? I'm personally thrilled to see a woman on the ticket and guess what, I even agree with her personal beliefs! Oh, forgot - that put me in the dummy category. Whatever. I'm not young kid - I joined the Navy at 18 and was in a predominantly male field (electronics) back in the day. Seeing women making strides forward has me so excited I was smiling and laughing all day long. If the Dems had chosen Hilary and McCain stuck with the established GOP choices, I may have switched parties. Now I don't have to.

Beyond That

Hey Denise...her husband is actually one of those crab fishermen like on Deadliest Catch...lol.

My glow is doing fine too

Wow.  John McCain is really going for the gold.  No girl crush here.  One of the most memorable lines I have heard is from a comedian who said be careful what you wish for, because Blacks wanted a Black person to replace Thurgood Marshall and we got Clarence Thomas.  That sums up Palin for me.

My morning glow is just fine over here.

He could've gone with Condi Rice, a two for
one

Thank you. You put it right where it should be. I can't believe all the oohing and ahhing over this as though we couldn't see it coming. He probably really wanted Condi Rice, a two for one, but her presence would have secured his spot as the Bush twin. And of course, just too obvious if you're running a game on the people with a quota scheme.  On the other hand, mabe Rice wasn't "cute" enough.

Really, this is the same man who jokes/sings about bombing Iran, doesn't understand economic issues, and called his wife a "c**t" in front of reporters. Scary.

New....but chiming in!

Living in Alaska all we here is that she will not be running.  I guess I am a little naive and fell for that.  I have met her and she is a wonderful person and too darn cute.  I took this shot when she was giving my husband an award.

I also thought after the mess she has been in here that she definatley would not run.  Who knows?

That's your husband?!

Wow, great shot and great guy you're married to. Thank you for sharing the photo and your thoughts. I'd love to hear the story about your husband saving the woman and children. Wow.

Experience?

I thought the arguments against Obama and for McCain (and Clinton) hinged on time in office in Washington "experience"? How exactly is McCain going to make the argument that Palin is ready to be president and Obama is not? How is Palin who shares none of Hillary's views supposed to appeal to Clinton supporters who thought she more experienced than Obama other than shared anatomy?

Looking forward to the forthcoming pretzel logic. Should be fun! :)

Arguments against both VP's

Both candidates now have issues to defend with their VP choices. I love Biden and believe he was a great choice, but the GOP will attack the Dem ticket saying, how does Biden represent change? Now, the Dems will go after the GOP ticket w/ Palin as not ready.

Hopefully, we get can back to some real issues.

Evaluation

looking at the veepship in the context of the two selections earmarked for that office.

Obama erred, one of omission. Whatever Palin's views, whatever her experience level, this is what it comes down to.

18 million voted for Hillary. X percentage of those voters will not vote for Obama.

Y number would have voted for Obama if he selected say... Sebelius.

Z number will vote for McCain based on his selection today.

Obama's supporters tell me Biden is a good debater, he is fiesty, a good guy to have on your side in a fight. Oh, and he sponsored VAWA after all. (Every time that VAWA one is tossed around my mind wanders back to why bother with say... emily's list, after all... guys are going to take care of us, right? No. OK, then VAWA means he is an ally, not a viable substitute, not a viable replacement, for one of us being there.)

In presidential politics, candidates have to scratch and claw for every vote they can convince to go their way. In such a vote to vote environment, why in bloody hell would someone ignore that Y vote? Votes that would have been predisposed to go that way if only someone had the good sense to recognise those 18 million, like it or not, count. Like it or not, their views matter, and those views are significant in this election.

This was not an election where a candidate could easily dismiss the collective vote of women - think on that... are we gaining some legitimate national clout now? Yet Obama, going first, made his choice, leaving a huge huge gift on the table for McCain, sorta like a football on your team's 10 yard line, your team is on the other end of the field, and one player on the other team is now picking up that football. Oops.

I said it last weekend, and I'll say it again. Selecting Biden was a huge mistake. And today, McCain took the first step towards making that mistake reality.

I can't believe my eyes.  My husband is laughing at me right now.  I get my news off of Blogher.  You guys are good.

Sexism?

How many of us think that she would have been even on a short list if Hillary hadn't been involved on the Dem side?  This may be overly cynical of me (I don't doubt that, actually), but it smacks of PR, not policy.  I think he picked her because she's charasmatic, young, family oriented like Obama, and has a uterus like Hillary...his staff and he are just trying to combat tha powerhouse on the other side of the aisle and cover up all of his recent gaffs.

Agree completely

Not cynical. Jill has a great post here referencing the same idea.

yep

washy || http://washwords.com/words || washwords.dc@gmail.com

had he not made the gaffe about the houses, it'd be romney, but now he has to act "not rich" I'm uber-cynical admittedly, but I get mad even thinking about the spin that this is a feminist choice. it's not my kinda feminism. i can only hope (omg! omg! like totally!) that women, men, everyone see this and are moved NOT to vote for mccain.

Great Comment CRosberg!

Your absolutely right out of all the comments on the page you hit out the ball park. It is Publicity and marketing ploy all designed to take the flax off McCain for awhile. He was slipping in the polls in the last 3 weeks so strategically that was the best play. It's like playing a Chess Game. The question is, "Will this help him win the election now or will it hurt him?" I believe he made a bad calculation. McCain thought that if he waited a week or two for Obama to annouce his V.P Choice he would get the upper hand and switch gears on Obama BUT OF COURSE--The weather changed now for the next 1week-2weeks CNN will be reporting on the hurricane and lets just hope some other news doesn't dominate the airways. He was expecting 50,000 people at the convention now it will be less because people lost money when they booked their flight, hotel stay etc.

There is movie with Eddie Murphy and a Guy who was a thief/killer and he kinapped Eddie Murphy's girlfriend and eventually ended up having Eddie Murphy holding a button--which if he were to let go of it, it would kill is girlfriend because she's laying on table with a blade going around the edge--Her neck be would gone. Anyway, the Guy (the killer) said in the movie---WHEN YOU THINK YOU SCREWING THEM---THEY SCREWING YOU.

John McCain yes made a Gutsy Move but that bold move just bit him in the A** because now instead of working on the convention he's working on nothing. I predict that in another 2 weeks he still won't have much air time because there is another hurricane coming out at sea and something else will dominate the airways.

Pot, Kettle...

Would Obama be where he is if he were just another face in the crowd? Sarah Palin's name has been in the running since the beginning, both because she's female, and because she's an energy powerhouse. If being a woman made her more of a desirable candidate, then so be it. Both parties played that game this time around. And frankly, its better than any stodgy old white man. Obama's backers are right. We need some new, fresh blood in the White House. She is that.

And incidentally, she has two more years of executive experience than anyone else on a Presidential ticket. And far less years of "experience" at being a lobbyist handpuppet, like Joe Biden.

Whoa...let's look at some of

Whoa...let's look at some of those statements...She's still a relative unknown outside of a pretty small group of people.  That's just the way it is.  And you're right, until Obama's speech at the DNC, he was pretty unknown outside of parts of the midwest.  But where is her book?  Where is her statement of belief?  Who is she?  Does she have the president of Georgia calling her first when the Russians attack, before even Bush (as Biden did)?  Does she have international experience, have contacts all over the world and the respect of people in other countries (like Obama and Biden both do)?

Having looked at some of her stances, I agree with her on some stuff, so that's not the issue.  And I'm proud that a woman is going to be in the running in this election, regardless.  But let's face it.  If Clinton hadn't been running as well, no way in HELL that the GOP would have put up a woman to be there WHEN McCain dies.

Where is her book?  What

Where is her book?  What does that have to do with running for president?  I don't understand.

Katherine Stone

Do I understand you correctly?

"Would Obama be where he is if he were just another face in the crowd?"

Ae you saying that Obama is only where he is because of his race? By that logic, why didn't Carole Mosely Braun, Alan Keyes, Al Sharpton, Doug Wilder, Jesse Jackson or Shirley Chisholm get farther?

Clearly, McCain's choice of Palin was a shrewd move and the timing was very effective in disrupting Obama's buzz. I would hope we can talk about both Obama and Palin without essentialism.

OMG! SARAH PALIN!!

SHE'S AMAZING!!! THIS POST IS EXACTLY RIGHT!  I LOVE HER!!! OMG!!!  THIS IS AMAZING!!!!

Constitution, Meet Shredder

Sarah Palin may be a woman, but she does not speak for me in any way, shape, or form. I am a firm believer in not voting for anyone who doesn't represent me or my values, regardless of that candidate's sex. So hats off to the conservative women who now have someone who looks like them in terms of body parts and acts like them. I guess you win. And if you win the general election, I'm looking forward to losing ever more of my civil rights. Sigh. Can't wait to FOIA my FBI file... Man, abstaining from alcoholic beverages really sucks at times like this.

Suzanne, I agree

You are so right -- just because she has a woman's body does not mean she shares either my experience or my values -- in the same way when Geraldine Ferraro ran for VP w/Mondale in '84, Republican women did not flock in droves to vote for her.

~~ Contributing Editor, Mata H. also blogs right along at Time's Fool

Hello? she has NO stance on anything related
to foreign policy

Remember the commenter The Style Page? Terrified of Dems being soft on terror.

Well - according to info from the draft Palin folks, they didn't want her to have a position on foreign policy because it's not in the purview of a governor. Likewise, if you think people do not know Obama after 18 mos as a candidate, and that made people who fear for terrorist attacks more fearful, how on earth does Palin being a heartbeat from CIC comfort anyone?

Sorry - but McCain just set himself up for a serious lesson on how to not contradict yourself - and why it's bad to make personal attacks the primary method of trying to win.

Bush limped, LIMPEd us through and into the worst reputation we've ever had internationally by pretending we could rely on Cheney or Rumsfeld - how's that working for us?

Please. I am totally with Suzanne and others who imply that this is a total miscalculation.

The biggest pitfall will be for Obama and Biden to get over their sexism to the extent they express any - they need some time with Chris Rabb!!! :)

Wait....

Last I heard, the Obama campaign was going out of their way to silence critics using their attack dogs. I guess, when it comes to rights, the First Amendment is totally trumped by the penumbras and emanations...

Well...

First  - I love your post, as a blog post. I meant to say that - I love those kind. :)

During the primary, I tangled in a major way with bloggers who are bullies and support Obama - and it was awful. Even locally, I was threatened late last month to stop writing about a "rising star" in the Ohio GOP or else "anti-Jill" blogs would be started and personal attacks, at me, lobbed.

But you aren't arguing that McCain's people and supporters don't work to make everyone stay on message?

What exactly are you referencing?

Thanks.

Jill
Writes Like She Talks

I would imagine she's

I would imagine she's referencing the Obama's campaign's complaint to the Department of Justice about the American Issues Project's ad on Bill Ayers. Going to the DOJ is nothing but an intimidation tactic. In talking to campaign finance law experts, I determined it would be hard to even conclude that the AIP is doing anything illegal, not to mention "criminal." If the campaign were actually concerned about the AIP's legal tax status, they'd take the complaint to the FEC or the FCC or the IRS. Going to the DOJ is just bullying. They want people off that Ayers story, and they want to scare them off by suggesting it's somehow "criminal" to bring it up.

Second, the Obama thugs were out in Chicago last week, jamming all the call lines on one local Chicago radio show, which had the temerity to interview a man who is investigating Obama's connections to Ayers. Stanley Kurtz is a well-respected researcher and writer who has succeeded in getting his hands on the documentation of Ayers' and Obama's work together on the Annenburg Challenge. When he appeared on Milt Rosenberg's long-form interview show last week, the Obama campaign sent out an action alert e-mail asking supporters to shout him down.

References here, and here.

Obama always says he's skinny but tough. Right now he looks like a skinny bully.

So I'm a Thug?

Well, I've never been called that before! You know, this community is supposed to be about sharing our opinions and discussing our feelings in a respectful way. Be passionate, sure. More passion the better. But don't call someone a thug for taking action and making a phone call to a radio station to protest/challenge someone  with whom he/she disagrees. How is that action any different than Kurtz going on the show to express his views?

Only through conflict and dissent can we find peace and compromise.

Here's to hoping we can continue this dialogue - and all conversations - through respect and not w/name-calling.

Seriously?  Someone from

Seriously?

Someone from the Republican party--the party of Rove, Cheney, Coulter, Nixon, Novak, Swift Boat, Ingraham, O'Reilly, and Limbaugh--calling someone else a bully?

Seriously?

The party that has told Democrats for YEARS that if it were too damn hot to get out of the kitchen?

That would be hilarious, if it weren't so damn sad.

Let's not be hypocritical, here.

If you're going to be pro-McCain, that's fine. If you agree with his politics, you should vote for him and be excited to do so. But that excitement shouldn't devolve into ridiculous statements like this. The way the GOP has manhandled crowds for the last eight years and trounced all over the Freedoms of Speech and Assembly should be enough to make a statement like that look ludicrous.

never heard of her

My Very Right-Winged MIL just called and congratulated me on "the Democrats winning the Oval Office."  She's never heard of her, neither have I.

But just at face value - a woman, young, mother - McCain's catering to the Independents on this one. On the cover she's everything McCain isn't and it's really interesting how he slams Obama for not having enough experience, but she's been the Govenor of Alaska for less than two years.

Very exciting

I just called my mother and she is dancing around her house with excitement.  A woman as VP candidate!   I bet there are a lot of women around the country who feel the same way and are dancing around their own homes and offices.  I think it takes away from Governor Palin, and is an insult in a way, to assert that she was simply picked for her uterus.  I bet she actually has some intelligence and something worthwhile to say.

She may not have the same beliefs or fall on the right side of the issues for some, but it doesn't mean she won't make great strides.  I think she could have a positive impact, for instance, on McCain's stance on equal pay.  She is a very interesting woman -- a mother of 5 children, a governor with a high approval rating, a hockey player and a marathoner, a fisher and hunter, a former sportscaster, a reformer who has done things like drive her own self around her state or take commercial airlines (she got rid of the state's private jet).  She is a modern, renaissance woman and for that I'm excited.  There's also a lot we don't know, and it is up to her to be able to hold her own against Senator Biden.  We have no idea whether she'll be able to do that or not, but I'm willing to give her the chance, just like I'm willing and open to hear what Obama, McCain and Biden have to say.

-- Katherine Stone Postpartum Progress

how does that qualify her?

Katherine, it's great that she is a modern woman.  I applaud her for being personally fiscally responsible.  So sh'e a good mom, and outdoorswoman.  How exactly does that prepare her for the two major responsibilities of the Vice President?  1) to serve as president should the president die, resign or be removed 2) serve a President of the Senate and break a tie should it occur.  What I keep hearing about her is that she's a mom and fisherwoman, etc.  I'm all about moms being fully qualified to work - I've done that myself, earning a Master's degre and making a career change in the process.  There is no way in hell I would propose that I am qualified to lead this country.  She's a nice person and maybe a good governor - she hasn't been in the office long enough for anyone to really know - only 2 years!  In today's world, we can't afford this kind of reckless loose-cannon McCain mentality.  Change is one thing- this is nuts!
