With spring in the air and summer soon to follow, it's time to salute a group of moms who have refused to let their breeding habits prevent them from doing what they love: listening to live music.
Got kids? Love music? Then Rock-n-Romp is for you. Started in the Washington D.C. area five years ago by rockin' mom Debbie Lee, Rock-n-Romp is "a family friendly concert series showcasing fantastic local-area musicians and bands. Shows are held during the day in a relaxed, kid-safe environment. The volume might be low, but the music is designed for parents and kids both in mind. Kids enjoy the music, experiment with instruments, dance, or just enjoy the other activities available to them, and parents get the ever-so-rare opportunity to listen to great live music and enjoy a beer (Emphasis mine) with other parents. Romps give parents who miss their social life (Again, emphasis mine) a chance to get out, enjoy some music that might be new to them, and expose their kids to great bands in a safe, friendly environment."
Sounds good, you say, but I don't live in Washington D.C.
No problem. Rock-n-Romp will be alive and kicking this summer in Austin, Texas, thanks to BlogHer's own music-loving mama Paige Maguire. BlogHer's post-punk mama Sweetney brought Rock-n-Romp to the Baltimore area last year. And just last weekend, Rock-n-Romp busted its very first move in Memphis, Tennessee.
Writes Stacey Greenberg on the Rock-n-Romp Memphis blog:
It was 75 degrees outside and sunny. A keg of Sierra Nevada was surrounded by ice. Sixty parents mingled, danced, and spread blankets on the grass. Sixty or more kids in face paint and multiple tattoos ran through the yard with various musical instruments. They rocked. They romped. There wasn't a cooler place to be on April 1st.
Maybe I'm still hormonal from two pregnancies in two years, but that description and these pictures made me want to cry with happiness. So now I'm putting out the call for Bay Area moms who miss their rock-n-roll roots. I've got the backyard, the kids, and the electricity for the amps; the question is: Do you know any bands who don't mind a little juice box to go with their jam?
