Edublogging

Hello Everyone!

My name is Laura Blankenship and I'm an Instructional Technologist at Bryn Mawr College, an all-women's college outside of Philadelphia. My colleagues, Barbara Ganley, on the faculty of the Writing Program at Middlebury College, and Barbara Sawhill, Director of the International Learning Center at Oberlin college, and I are interested in discussing and exploring the use of social software to transform education. We "met" via our various blogs and all have extensive experience blogging, podcasting, flickring, furling, deliciousing, etc. We'd love to have other like-minded or interested educators (or parents of school-aged children) join us to talk about the potential social software has to change the educational landscape. Here is the official-sounding proposal.

Blogging in the Classroom and Blogging the Classroom: Using social software to create learning opportunities for our students and ourselves

This panel will bring educators and educational
technologists together to talk about the benefits and realities of using blogs and other Web technologies in the classroom. We will discuss how social software enhances and transforms the learning environment, dynamics, and outcomes; the responses of students to blogging classes; and impacts on our teaching and our network of colleagues when we blog the experience.

Blogging and language learning

Thank you Laura for getting the discussion started.

I have tried to post here now twice and each time the blog crashes, so let's hope three times is a charm...

My own blogging has sort of come to a halt as I am teaching a language course this semester (in addition to running the Cooper International Learning Center). The course is a 300 level Spanish language class with the non-specific title of Advanced Spanish Communication. I was told by the department that I could teach it any way I wanted.... as long as the students worked on their communication skills in Spanish.

Hmmmm. If you give a mouse a cookie....

The course is entirely blogcentric. No text books, no papers. And for the moment it seems the response has been pretty positive.Here is an article for the student paper written by one of my students

I hope we can come together at BlogHer to talk about what blogging can do for teaching, for professional development, but more importantly I think, for learning.
