Mysterious blogging language

I am interested in connecting my blog, in the near future, to a group blog. It's called an aggregate: I barely understand what that means.

The instructions for connecting one's blog talk about syndication, RSS, and ATOM. I don't have a clue what they are. My Blogger blog has ATOM at the bottom.

Can women here help me, tell me what the above mean and answer my questions? I sure would appreciate it.

I am driven to write and having this PC has open up doors for me. I'm extremely intrigued about blogs because it is a way to be heard and tell one's story.

Thank you in advance for your kindness, patience and understanding.

Pythia

Welcome - Feedburner is your RSS Friend

Welcome to blogging and BlogHer. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. What that means is that if I like your blog and want to know when you have a new post I can subscribe to your blog.

When you do post new content I can be alerted and either come to your blog or use software to see your work.

One of the easiest ways for new bloggers to set up an RSS feed is by using Feedburner It will walk you through the steps and help you to place the RSS subscription button in the right place on your blog.

Feedburner can also tell you how many people are coming to your blog and where they are coming from. There are other subscription services but this is the one that I use.

There is a video tutorial on RSS feeds at FreeVlog, Tutorial on RSS Number 8

This will get you started and then we can talk about ATOM, but maybe not cuz Google has just purchased Feedburner. Keep asking questions.

Aggregate

Gena did a great job explaining RSS so I'm going to talk about aggregate sites.

I assume what you're thinking about doing is feeding your blog content (either partial or full feed) into a group (aggregate) blog. Blogburst offers this type of service - you register your blog and they find sites that want to use your content and they pull it in to their site.

Can I ask why you're thinking about joining this group? What's in it for you? Are they paying you? Are you hoping to gain traffic?

Mysterious blogging language BlogHer - Iggy
Uncensored

When I wanted to post a comment here earlier I didn't see an area to do so. Not sure why that was and yes I was fully logged in at the time. In the end I did my own article on the subject. Hopefully it will be of some use in explaining this technology. Several links to previous articles I've done are included at the link below. As well as many links to other sites that offer explanations and tutorials.

Hi Iggyz - Your Comment Link Does Not Work

I wanted to respond on your blog but I couldn't. Something is preventing me from leaving a comment. Anyway, I wanted to say Welcome, hope to meet you at the conference.

The other things that I wanted to pipe in about; No - paying for the conference is separate from the BlogHer website. I don't think you should have to pay the conference fee in order to use the site or the other way around.

My understanding is that they are two separate but linked experiences. Those of us that went to the first conference wanted to stay in touch with each other. BlogHer grew from that point on. There are thousands of people here interacting or lurking.

The conference is our corporeal meet-up but BlogHer is our day to day(or whenever)touch point. I'm sure there is a lot that could be improved or re-visited but I know the ladies (and quite possibly the server) are swamped with the upcoming conference.

Your ideas about Instant Messaging are interesting. I don't do IM myself but open to new stuff. Maybe after the conference you could send them ideas.

See ya,

Gena - Out On The Stoop

Gena is right.

BlogHer the organization and BlogHer the site are sisters but they aren't one entity. There are people who only attend the conference and there are others who only read the site.

As for not being able to leave a comment, I can't imagine why that would have happened if you were logged in. Maybe you hit a momentary server glitch?

If it happens again, please click the "contact us" link and send a description of the problem, time it occurred, your system information. We'll try and recreate the problem and then work to resolve it.

See you at BlogHerCon.

Thanks for the support and info everyone

I will check it out.

Denise, a couple of your questions took me aback. Who is "they?" No one is paying me. "What's in it for me?"
I want to blog for my own pleasure. As I said in my introduction in that thread, I joined blogher to learn more about blogging. In my blog, I want to write my story and about my thoughts, opinions, beliefs, feelings, about my life and the world. I want people to read my blog.

Your questions made me wonder if I belong here. They make me think that blogher is mostly young professional women, and I don't belong here.

I'm a 66 year old retired woman living on social security. I know very little about computers just enough to get by.

My answer to your initial post was related specifically to what you said in your message. Here's what you said:

I am interested in connecting my blog, in the near future, to a group blog. It's called an aggregate: I barely understand what that means.

I assumed that you had a specific aggregate/group blog in mind to join and was hoping to be able to help you decide if it was really something that you want to do. Some women I've talked to find that group blogging, particularly of the sort where all of their content is pulled into another site, is not right for them.

You are certainly welcome here and definitely do belong. My apologies for not understanding your initial comment and causing you discomfort.
