New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg left the Republican party rather abruptly yesterday, stating he wanted to begin a nonpartisan approach.
His decision has created sparks of interest as to whether he will invest his multi-billion dollar fortune in a bid for the presidency as an independent in 2008.
"Although my plans for the future haven't changed, I believe this brings my affiliation into alignment with how I have led and will continue to lead our city."
Bloomberg has often denied any interest in the presidency but his decision to leave the GOP along with his recent trip to New Hampshire has caused speculation about his intentions.
Bloomberg stated that his trip last weekend was purely a social visit and said on his radio show, "People will read into the fact that I'm going to be in New Hampshire tomorrow."
Host John Gamblind replied, "They have a primary there, you know."Bloomberg's decision to register as an independent is viewed as a way to give him more options in his political career, whether as mayor of New York City or in the future if he officially runs for president.
He plans to implement a nonpartisan approach because, he says "A nonpartisan approach has worked wonders in New York. We've balanced budgets, grown our economy, improved public health, reformed the school system and made the nation's safest city even safer."
Mixed reactions have been posted around the blogosphere since his announcement yesterday.

Bloomberg was a RINO at BEST.
But, who REALLY cares?
Rudy and Hillary…….
Stay tuned……

Despite specifying the exact amount of time remaining for his mayoral tenure, visiting Presidential campaign states like New Hampshire (technically for a reunion) and making some other moves that some might infer as a pre-cursor to a Presidential run, Bloomberg is once again playing the PR game of "I'm not running for President, wink wink."

Apparently, it is only shocking to Michael Bloomberg that he was never a real Republican.
Maria Houser Conzemius at My PC writes:
Bloomberg's take on the Republicans and Democrats in Washington as being too timid to take on the big issues with common sense and purpose, and too busy squabbling to solve issues even if they did have common sense and purpose, is absolutely correct. All you have to do is take a look at what is and isn't happening on immigration to know that that's true.

New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg is no longer a Republican. There is speculation that he may run for president. Maybe he is just fed up.
Maybe he is just fed up with the Republican party. I have that feeling myself.

I heart Bloomberg
This news made me so happy...and intrigued.
I was happy too.
I was happy to hear the news as well. I hate this whole "two party" system we have...I would love to see a strong Independent candidate run for president...and give the American people more choices than just Republican or Democrat.
Morra, what else do you know about Bloomberg? Why do you "heart" him so????

I'm just anticipating a
I'm just anticipating a presidential showdown between Bloomberg, Giuliani and Hillary. I can imagine how tough it would be to decide between 3 influential politicians of New York.
I don't think Giuliani has a chance...
Personally...I don't think Giuliani has a chance of winning the Republican nomination. If there is a chance Hillary could win (and she proves herself as the best candidate for the job)...I would love to be able to vote for a woman. I don't know too much (anything really) about Bloomberg, but if he is a good presidential candidate...maybe a Clinton/Bloomberg ticket could work? But, like I said...I don't know all the facts about any of the candidates yet...so who knows how it will all shake out. Interesting thing to consider though.

Mayor Bloomberg..a Dem, Republican,
independent
As a an ex-politician...if there is such a thing. Bloomberg was a democrat before he was a republican and now he is an independent. I am all for a 3rd party--God knows we need it. The problem is the Lieberman Affect---the senator from CT (my State) who ditched the dems in order to run as independent after LOSING the primary. What I am saying is that we have to be careful about this pseudo-creation of an imaginary third party. Bloomberg is a billionaire--and I do not hold that against him, but he has the means to buy his way into an election, before we can say democracy is alive and well. So I say if a third party is what we want then let's create a third party that addresses the needs of a true american democracy.

On the other hand
It costs so much to be in a presidential election, that I like the idea of a candidate who is able to finance his own way without being beholden to special interest groups.
Bloomberg is a straight-shooter. He is unabashedly pro-choice, and from what I read, supports gun control, stem cell research, and gay marriage. I am still learning more about him. From what I can see he could take votes from either side, as he is also conservative fiscally. I saw one poll that was done where they said he did move about half of his votes from either side.
But you are right, how much of this is a third party ,and how much is an individual third party's ego? Bloomberg is a "none of the above" candidate, not an authentic representative of a genuine 3rd party movement. I have yet to decide if that is enough for my vote. So far I am still an Obama supporter, but with some reservations there too.

Bloomberg
Hey he dated Diana Ross, so his cool points have gone way up as far as I am concerned. And your right, he has the means to finace his own camapaign. But I must say I do like a candidate that is beholden to somebody, whether its the mob, the gay community the Black & Latino community, Feminist who ever. He can be dangerous if he just keeps his own counsel. I know we don't like special interest--but to me those things can temper an ego run amuck.
