Republicans Sending Harassing Robo Calls to Voters
by Morra Aarons

Bloggers are urging anyone who has gotten an annoying recorded phone call (RoboCall) to report. Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo describes the phone scam: "A wave of harassing calls paid for by the NRCC targetting probable Democratic voters and uncommitteds with the intent of getting them pissed off at multiple repeat call-backs from what they think is the Dem campaign....

What we're talking about here are calls which purport to be from candidate A when in fact they're from candidate B and which call back repeatedly if you hang up before the call is finished. They're intentionally harassing calls -- meant to stick the blame on the other candidate."

I don't live in a contested district so I have not heard a call, but apparently the Republicans are sending them out in several tight Congressional districts.

If you get a scam phone call, what can you do? Marshall continues:

If you've gotten one of these calls, write down as much information about it as you can (time, phone number, etc.) and call the 'metro desk' of your local paper.

They're looking for political stories in the final days. And this is a good one.

If you're in a targeted district and you get a fishy recorded political call, the Democratic National Committee asks you call 1 888 DEM VOTE, the DNC's voter protection hotline, and record a testimonial.

Philly.com has a good article about the calls in PA.

More on the calls, nasty flyers, and general
scummy behavior

Matt Stoller at MyDD.com has more...

"Sources in Bergen County are reporting that an autodial robocall is being made that starts out sounding like a positive Bob Menendez message. If you hang up, it repeatedly calls you back. If you listen all the way to the end, it finishes by saying that Menendez is an embezzler and under criminal investigation.

This is a voter suppression tactic being used nationwide by the GOP. Initially callers will think they are hearing a call from the Menendez campaign asking for support. If they hang up, it will repeatedly call them back. The intention is to annoy the voter so much that they no longer support the candidate. For those who actually listen to the entire call, they are presented with a series of lies and smears against Menendez, also with the intention of suppressing turnout. It's a win-win tactic for them.

The NRCC is doing the same exact thing in Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and at least 53 other races across the country."

despicable

and no doubt, effective.

I hope heads roll for this (ah, yes, I can be so naive).

Robo Calls

I just posted about this the other day. John McCain woke my kids up one night and Laura Bush got me out of the bathroom. I'm sick of it.

Laura Bush of all people should have better
manners!

but this particular case of harassment I wrote about borders or illegal...because they are pretending to be candidates they are not.

Not called back

Saturday I received what seemed to be an automated call from a republican group. I hung up on it once I could identify who it was but I didn't continue to get call-backs.

However is anyone on our side really surprised by this behavior? (as sad as that seems)

Endless Phone Calls

I've never bothered to listen to one of these all the way to the end, so I don't know if they're the sort of calls you're talking about. Actually, I've stopped answering the phone altogether, I just wait for it to go to voicemail and delete it from there at the first sound of a recorded voice.

I've been receiving campaign calls for and against just about every measure on the ballot plus every candidate for weeks now. It gets much worse toward election day. I think I must be up to at least a dozen calls a day between my home phone and my cell phone. Add on all the fliers and it certainly starts to feel like harrassment. There should be a political Do Not Call list.

Nope, not a scam. Just annoying.

Yeah, sorry. Mine were legit campaign ads. Just annoying.

Not as annoying as yours, but annoying.
