End-of-month round-up: National Childhood Cancer and Leukemia Awareness Month.
by Amanda Shaffer

As BlogHers and women all around the nation gear up for the behemoth that is October National Breast Cancer Awareness month, let us take a moment to recognize and promote awareness of other cancers that are equally devastating, yet don't get the press time or research money that the more-publicized cancers receive.

Chrissi at No More Jellybeans reminds us of the importance of observing National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month:

...it will be 6 years since our little man passed away. Six years - that's exactly how old he was. I fear the 7th year - that means he will be gone longer than he was here with us. I'm not doing so well with this. I miss him SO much. I just can't believe it's been this long - truly , it feels just like I kissed him goodbye yesterday.

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness month - PLEASE support this cause and register to become a bone marrow donor, will you help children (and adults) like our son and register to become a donor? A simple blood test is all it takes.

In addition to adding yourself to the National Bone Marrow registry, one can also support the fight against childhood cancer by donating to the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation or the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Leukemia is the most common cancer among children and teens, accounting for almost one-third of all cancers among this age group.

In addition to donating directly to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, one also has the option of supporting a fundraising campaign in honor of a survivor or in memory of someone lost to a blood cancer.

Check out BlogHer Debutaunt's campaign goal to raise $1 million to fight leukemia (a.k.a. "kicking cancer's ass") during her lifetime:

I hate cancer and all that it affects. It doesn't just affect the person, but that person's entire network of friends and loved ones. I'll never stop fighting to help end this awful disease. I wish I could raise a million dollars. You all know me, I just might do that. So welcome to my Light The Night Walk homepage. The Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's nationwide walk to raise awareness and funds to cure leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Please take a moment to raise your own awareness of leukemia and other childhood cancers, if not for Chrissi or Deb's sake, for the sake of children and adults facing cancer everywhere.
