Holiday staple: The silk dress

By: Susan Wagner Topics: Fashion & Shopping

The holidays are coming, long days of eating and drinking and visiting with family and friends. If you're like me, you are already considering what you can wear that is both festive and functional, and that won't break your already-strained budget.

This season's solution is The Dress -- specifically, the silk mini dress.

Silk (or "silk") dresses are available at a variety of price points; Target has a terrific selection of real and faux silk dresses available just now. Watch department stores, too, particularly as Thanksgiving draws near and everything goes on sale. And remember, most stores will give you a price adjustment after the fact; check store policies when you buy.

Wear your silk dress on its own with pretty flats or heels; for a little more warmth, add light wool tights and a slim cardigan and some great ballet flats. For a more casual look, layer over a turtleneck or long-sleeved tee and leggings, or knee-high boots.

Bold prints, particularly dresses with print hems, are chic and fun and can be dressed up or down this holiday season. An A line dress flatters nearly every figure, and accommodates your turkey lunch. And a dress, even worn layered or with flats, is always a little more festive than pants.

I love it!

By: Suzanne Reisman

I am drooling over the clothes. Except for that Nanette Lapore dress. I LOVE Nanette Lapore (in fact, I just wore one of her dresses to a wedding I went to this weekend and will be wearing a different one to a wedding I'll be at in two weeks, thanks to Filene's Basement and eBay), but that dress looks like a very fancy trash bag. I can guarantee that I would look like a bad accident if I wore that, and I think most women would have a hard time pulling off the completely shapeless look. Otherwise, awesome finds and thanks for including Target. Although I adore the dresses at Anthropologie, I think they are a tad pricey. (Waiting for the sales, then I'll pounce.)

I think Target is the way to go

I've seen that particular Target dress on several women, all of varying shapes and sizes, and it looks fantastic on every single one. And TWENTY DOLLARS! You can't beat that.
