Fun with Photos
by Virginia DeBolt

So many fun things you can do with your photos, so little time. If you're like me—going to BlogHer08 armed with camera—you'll have a ton of photos to deal with soon. Even if you don't plan to attend BlogHer08, you can still have fun with your photos. Here are some ideas to spark your creativity. I've talked about some of them in depth before, so I'm just going to try to summarize the choices in this post. If I miss a favorite of yours, please add it. It may turn out to be someone's else's best choice, too.

Just about everyone is aware of Flickr these days. But did you know you can do a lot more with your photos once they are online at Flickr than just show them one at a time? Flickr suggests a few things on its Do More page, but some of my favorite Flickr partners aren't mentioned on this page.

Big Huge Labs has several Flickr toys that let you do things like Warholize or Hockneyize a photo, or add comic book style captions to your photos. (I'd like to see the comic book thought bubbles coming out of Skye's head at BlogHer07 when I started ad libbing stuff about how sexy HTML was during our accessibility panel.)

Flickr is also partnered with Picnik where you can do lots of editing and adjustments (including cropping photos to make them vertically oriented for the BlogHer masthead). Picnik has some very cool tools for color adjustment and other Photoshoppy tricks.

Speaking of Photoshop, Photoshop Express is now available online. You can do all sorts of things to your photos and then post them to Flickr or Facebook.

A.viary.com is another interesting site for photo work. This site is for the artistic and provides a number of different tools that can do things from simple photo editing to 3-D modeling and vector imaging.

Photrade lets you share your photos and sell them, too. If you get a terrific shot of San Francisco, you might consider selling it here. A helpful blog called Hyperphocal is affiliated with this site and contains lots of photo tips.

Snapfish is a popular online photo sharing site. You can add photos and create albums with Snapfish, and then share them with us!

At Slide.com you can create slideshows, complete with music. Slide also lets you create video skins and 'funpix' with stickers and thought bubbles.

If you want to get into the video and/or widget category to display your work, Sprout Builder has tools that let you create some fairly cool things in just a few minutes and then post them to most websites or social media sites.

One of the more interesting ideas for adding photos, recordings, video and more to a card-like interface meant to be a tribute is found at Tribbit. The thing that makes Tribbit different is that it's a collaborative card or tribute. Many people can be invited to contribute photos, voice recordings, and videos to make up the card.

A BlogHer08 sponsor, Smilebox will probably be evident around the convention halls. If you aren't going to be at BlogHer to get a look at it, you'll find it is really simple and fast to use. You can create fun, interactive and exciting displays for your photos in a short time.

With all these choices, I hope you can find the perfect tool to help you share your life, your adventures, your artistic talent, and your convention experience.

Where are your photos? Look for mine on Flickr, where I'm veesees.

Photoshop Express

I tried Photoshop Express. finally, and aside from the convenience of being free and online, I wasn't that impressed. It could use a few more features (like levels or curves in PS Elements, something for those of us who want a bit more control), but then you might as well buy Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. The B&W conversion worked pretty well, though.

Fun with Slide Shows

Also, they seem cool. I emailed them when I was having some trouble with their Beta application, and they gave me two freebies. I'd forgotten all about it, so I logged in and made another one.

Thanks for the list of photo sites!

Lately, I've moved almost completely over to posting pictures on my blog and every now and then I will put a few on Flickr. I used to spend much more time with Flickr, but lately, I've just not taken the time. I wanted to put a little more effort into writing, which was the point of the blog in the first place!

I just wanted to quickly pop back over here and edit my comment to add - Photrade is currently by invitation only.  It's still in Beta.

I sympathize

Photoshop is a very complicated software. There are many tutorials on the web that may help you with specific features. And a comprehensive book may help. You should still be able to find books for Photoshop 6 at amazon.

photoshop

Thanks I'll check out the web tutorials My local best buy "geek" told me the local Jr. college has a 6 part class on it. If I knew it was this tough to learn I would not have bought it. I have to shake off the fear of learning that creeps up on me as I get older!

Don't get discouraged

Many people who use Photoshop just do a few basics with it like cropping or brushing up things. It does a ton of things, but average bloggers probably don't use them all and most don't need to learn them all. I've been using it for years and I still think the pen tool was invented by some evil madman.
