If anyone wants to work out

I'm sure I'm not as fun as a WII (and if there's a way to play the system and get a giveaway, wink at me, I'll throw you the secret handshake and make my daughter's day!) but I will be in the gym every day.  So if you need someone to hold you accountable and gossip on the cardio machine, drop me a line..... I'm usually a first thing in the morning girl, but may well be after conference / before dinner. I'm not a pro, but I bet I can run you through serious riggers. ;)

Yay Motivation!

Hi Alyssa,

I'm a fellow blogger who is desparately trying to get my health in check and start excercising regularly.  I'm going weight watchers and "tracking" everything I eat, but I know the weight will come off so much easier (if that's even possible) and faster if I work out.  Today will be my first day back at the gym and my plan is to hit the treadmill for 30 minutes.  I'm going to try walking for 4 min and jogging for 2.  I'm hoping to soon be one of those skinny toned women in a cute workout outfit jogging for 30 minutes straight.  Any words of encouragment/advice would be greatly appreciated!  I look forward to hearing about your progress...and hear some great gossip!  Keep up the great work!

Shanna

Hope to be the best you....

Hi Shanna - Not sure that I can offer you magic words of encouragement, but I'm sure that I can be one of a TON of voices here on BlogHer that will congratulate you and tell you that you are not alone. All of us face our own hurdles to become the best that we can be. But those of us who are brave enough - and maybe strong enough - can acknowledge the difference between where we are and where we want to be, and then start the long slog to get there. It has nothing to do, necessarily, with a cute jogging suit, but with that feeling you get when you put one on.

So what I would say is to look for those hot and sassy moments in lots of areas of your life. What are the things that make you feel good - do more of those. Painting your nails? Taking a bubble bath? Fresh flowers? Treat yourself to all of those, because every time you do, you're telling yourself that you're "worth it."

The fitness thing is really just a matter of, as the Nike people say, just doing it. Set small achievable goals, because every time you achieve one, you're telling yourself that you can do it. Eventually, you just learn that you can do it. And don't let yourself not do it. I always tell myself that "something is better than nothing." I don't beat myself up on days that I don't make it to the gym, but i do walk the dog those days. Something, no matter how small, is better than nothing. Just do it. But do it for you.

You deserve to be the best you that you can be. You can't define it by how anyone else is built or what anyone else does, just by you. Am I better today than I was yesterday? Good!  Did i try today, rather than do nothing? Good!

And hey, I'll be in the gym at BlogHer. Or happy to host early morning walks up those big hills. Then we can take a picture, circle the date on the calendar, and look back next year.  :)

Good for you for getting going!

(Oh, I also find accountability very helpful.  If you can afford a trainer, that's what they're for. But tell someone else your goal and intent. Blog about it, it helps. Or do something really foolish like announce that as soon as you get back from BlogHer 08, you're giving up your car for 6 weeks to ride a bike everywhere you go in Seattle. Since you daughter will be at sleepaway camp in Vermont and you have no good excuse for not biking everywhere if you're not schleping her around. Damn, did I say that outloud? Now I have to do it.)
