Blog comments that make you say "wow!"
by Denise

I have to admit right up front, I'm not a blogger who gets really excited or really bummed about blog comments. I love and appreciate the comments that I get but I spend next to no time worrying about whether a post has comments or not. I don't blog for comments and I spend enough time knee deep in metrics to know that comments do not necessarily indicate success or good writing.

Having said that, I'm going to tell you that there are some comments that have made me scream with glee and there have been some comments that have caused me to scrap what I was blogging and blog something else entirely. This is one of those posts - I was blogging about moving and kids and school but something happened so here I am, blogging about comments.

Way back in 2005 I had a relatively new blog, Daily Dose of Denise. I had just made the commitment to BE a blogger rather than someone who blogged occasionally as an online community experiment when Nancy White commented on my blog. Even though Nancy has commented on my blog several times since that day, has linked me on more than one occasion and I've met her in person, I was still tempted to type that as OMG NANCY WHITE COMMENTED ON MY BLOG! It was just that big of a deal to this community geek.

Now if that's not enough to get someone excited, a couple of days later Scoble commented on my blog. And yes, once again, I was tempted to over-use the caps even though I no longer read his blog or follow his twitter or his friend feed. It's still cool to me that he commented.

I also fondly remember the day that Beth Kanter emailed me about teaching poetry because of a comment I left about something she'd said. (8/9/05 - I still have the email!) That was really huge to me. THE Beth Kanter! Now I think about that and I laugh because I work with Beth and I've met her many times. Still, it was a huge day for me.

I've had some other commenters who have just made my day because of WHO they are: Mary McDonough who played Erin on The Waltons. Rick Riordin's wife - he writes the children's book series about Percy Jackson.

There's my history with celebrity (or almost celebrity or celebrity just to me) commenters. It's been awhile since I've had one of those types of comments but today my partner had one...

CRESCENT DRAGONWAGON COMMENTED ON TW'S BLOG! errr sorry. See, I'm excited. I had the pleasure of informing TW of this momentous occasion because I saw the comment first. I yelled across the desk to TW when I saw it. And then, I tweeted it. And now, I keep saying it over and over again. It's awesome. Blogging just does NOT get more exciting than that.

Have you had a "celebrity" or a "celebrity to you" comment on your blog? Whose comment would make you jump up and down for joy? Now excuse me while I go yell it again a few more times...

Crescent Dragonwagon commented on TW's blog! Wow.

Former students

I've had some former students or their parents comment on my blog. That's always fun.

I know it might seem silly, but when my mother-in-law commented that she loved my post, that really made my day!

Not silly!

I backspaced a paragraph about the first time my mother commented on my blog because it felt like a different type of thing from "celebrity" commenters. It was an OMG wow moment but then there was the "ugh, did I really want her reading everything I write" moment. (Hi mom!)

Craig Newmark. Some folks

Craig Newmark. Some folks from NPR.  I know some folks from a major television and magazine conglomerate read it because they have told me that they do, but if they have commented, they don't link back to their own corporate site.

I was most geeked out over Newmark though.  I love that guy.

Geeked out

Heh. I'd probably be pretty geeked out about Newmark too. Who am I kidding, not probably - definitely!

Can I have your autograph?

Next time I see you in person I won't spend so much time yelling at you about patriarchy and I'll ask for your autograph instead. :-)

Which brings up another topic - how many bloggers are "famous" or "celebrity" but don't realize it or believe it? A lot.

ah, I remember that post and your comment

I've had comments from people who I blogged about who I never thought would leave a comment -- I get excited about all comments though!

It's that never thought thing

Agree, I do love all comments but there are those moments when you're just in shock that you got a comment from the unimaginable. :-)

Me! :)

Wil Wheaton once (or twice) posted on my (now-defunct) blog a few years back.  That was pretty damn cool.

TV Hot Shots

Hi Denise,

I didn't get a comment, but I got a very cool email from one of the editors of "Lost" earlier this year.  Then, just the other day, I got a cool/not so cool comment from the former Exec Prod of "Beverly Hills 90210" about a mistake I had made in my post on the new "90210."  I did a mea culpa and made corrections, which was the not so cool part, but it was still cool that he had read it.

On another level, I was thrilled when I got a comment from a couple who loved my "Damages" recaps.  The really cool part?  They were watching the show in Australia where they lived.  Now that was cool!

email vs comments

Well I guess email is good, almost as good as comments. Hmmm maybe I like comments more than I originally thought?

Stefanie Wilder-Taylor

Back during the whole "cocktail playdates" kerfuffle, I wrote a post about Melissa Summers' appearance on the Today Show, and linked to Stefanie Wilder-Taylor's book "Sippy Cups are not for Chardonnay". I was so thrilled when she commented on the post! And then I met here at BlogHer this year and she even remembered my post. That was pretty darn cool!

Everybody excites me.

If I am having a slow period I use my diagnostics in my server to see who is coming and from where.  It blows my mind that there are regulars from Kuwait and Korea.  I am sorry they don't tell me what they'd like to hear about.  I don't have anything to get off my chest, so it's very satisfactory to me that people talk back.

Locations that make you say Wow!

You've hit on another topic I thought about including in this post. I've wandered around my stats, amazed at the locations and I have definitely said WOW when I stumbled upon some that interested me.

China. I love readers from China.

I Suffer From Comment Envy

It's true. I want people commenting on my blog posts and even though I know that comments don't equate  traffic, I still want the comments. On my personal blog I get so few ( I don't get that many on my posts at BlogHer and yes I do pay attention)

So no celebrities But I get excited whenever anyone comments on a post -- I just love that they took the time to share their thoughts. It always makes me smile.

Shaming me!

Every time you post I think to myself "I need to comment on that later" and I never quite get a chance to do it.

I'm going to have to add a to do reminder to my Outlook or something.

But let's just pretend for a minute Elana - which celebrity or celebrity only to you would make you stop and squee with joy if they commented on your blog?

Didn't Mean to Shame

I think if a prominent journalist commented on my blog I would be having a very toothy smile.

I'm with Elana

I get excited about anyone who comments on a post of mine. They become a celebrity with me and I pay attention to them after that. I love it when someone takes the time to create a conversation with me, or add a thought or new idea to something I'm thinking about.

Now, if Eric Meyer came to Web Teacher and gave me an "atta girl" or if Natalie Goldberg came to First 50 Words and gave me an "atta girl" I'd probably be over the moon.

What a cool way to smile

This is a great post, Denise!

Mark Cuban, Micah Sifry or David - I forget which, and seriously? Lisa Stone and all the BlogHers, one of my cousins left a comment earlier this week and that was awesome - I had no idea he even read my blog.  Jay Rosen, Amy Gahran - I know there are other media people - some of the Plain Dealer reporters.

And earlier this week - oh this was great - I got a comment from a man in his 80s who started his own blog two years ago after writing a bunch of comments at my blog!  He named the blog Angry Grandpa - it was right before the Ohio 2006 elections and a lot was going on.  He is back and that was wonderful for him to stop by!!

It's definitely fun anytime I get a comment but first timers will always be firsttimers and I think that's great too :)

I suffer from comment-envy...

I suffer from comment-envy, too.

Back when a lot of the art quilters were blogging and reading and commenting a lot, I got comments from Melody Johnson and Gabrielle Swain. Later met both in person and had grand RL get togethers.

Nancy White once commented on my blog and I still get people who read that post somehow referred from Nancy.

But I do not attract comments from big name bloggers or even big name crafty bloggers. Not even here on BlogHer.

Oh, wait...Shimelle commented on my "why scrapbook" post, linked to it on her blog and started a pretty little commenting time. That was a fun week!

Who would make me squee if they commented on my blogs?

Crafty Chica, if she commented on ASIT or the posts here. We've twittered a couple times, though, so that's cool.

On my fitness blog, it would excellent if my old trainer, Guido, or any of my friends at the gym would actually stop by and say hello.

 like you!!!

Peace, love and glitter from Crafty Chica!

OMG!

Crafty Chica commented on Deb's blog (and mine, which is not something I ever really thought would happen since I no longer blog crafty!)

This made my day. Totally. Even better than Crescent Dragonwagon commenting on TW's blog. OK maybe not better than but equally great.

Grinning from ear to ear!!

Crafty Chica commented on my blog just an hour I commented here! And it wasn't even a crafty post!

Crafty Chica! My day is made!

Now I'm wishing I'd said that I hoped Peeler commented on my fitness blog.

Nah... I'd really rather have comments from Trainer Guido (who looks a whole lot like the Peeler) or Trainer Adam (who you can see with me here) or one of my RL gym buds. But maybe I need to hand out blog cards so they can do that!

You rock, Denise!

When some of the more "famous" mom bloggers started leaving comments, I was thrilled. But then I realized it was more about the thrill of making new connections that really made my blogging worthwhile.

Agree

The best everyday comment experience is often a comment from someone brand new to your blog. Someone you've never heard of. Someone whose blog you've never been to before.

The "celebrities" give us that boost of adrenaline but they aren't what keep us going, right?

Blogging Comments From Blanca

I don't get very many comments on my blog. However the one that made my day was from my friend, Blanca, in Honduras. She is a Honduran, and she lives in a very poor community (at least by our standards. She uses it to practice reading in English. I was delighted!

I love this. I'd have been just as excited about that. Heck I am just as excited about that!

We get a lot of email through the contact us form at BlogHer from people who don't speak any English or for who English is not their first language. Joy and I work hard to make sure we understand their questions, answer them properly and encourage them to blog and comment.

Long lost...

I have stories like that, too!

Awhile back, I noticed someone from a law agency in NYC kept visiting my blog. It was weird. So I looked them up and I discovered it was the firm an old friend from iVillage worked at!

Also, a child who lived with me when she was a pre-teen commented on my myspace for awhile. That was really good - but she's disappeared again, sigh.

Now if long lost friends from "offline" stumbled into my blog and commented, THAT would be cool.

I'm loving that this post is bringing so many different stories and experiences. :-)

Ina May :)

I admit I was very excited when midwife Ina May Gaskin left a few comments on my blog (and then we emailed back and forth a bit). She may not be a celebrity, but I admire her and all of the work she has done a great deal. :)

It was also cool to have an epidemiologist who conducted the biggest US study re: the safety of home births contact me (and then talk to him on the phone), and to receive a comment from Laura Shanley (unassisted childbirth advocate) too.

I'm a birth junkie, what can I say? Now I just need to get Ricki Lake to read and comment on my blog. ;)

I Love Comments

I'm relatively new here, so I haven't received many comments yet (and my blog doesn't really get a lot of traffic, I'm still finding my voice). However, when Sassymonkey linked to my post about the debates (Canadian election) I fully admit to doing a happy dance. Someone from Blogher was actually reading what I wrote and LINKED to me!!!

Ok, I'm still pretty excited about it.

I have cherished all the comments that I've received here. Your comment was the first I received after I started blogging a bit about politics and the Canadian election. I was so thrilled that someone actually read my random thoughts!

Even though I know that comments are not an indication of "success or good writing", they do let the blogger know that s/he is not writing just for him/herself. Just knowing that someone else is reading and responding gives me the drive to keep going, to explore new territory, to grow as a writer and a blogger.

I think that the comments make me a better blogger.

Awe!

I'll tell you the truth - when Sassymonkey links me, I'm a happy woman too. I'm not sure I've written anything worth her linking to me lately - I think you've inspired me to work on that. Maybe something ranty about the Booker Short List, that would probably get a link from her!

~Denise

I was happy to link to you!

I frequently gripe to anyone that will listen that there just aren't enough Canadian women blogging about issues. Of course, I don't blog about them on my personal blogs either so I'm one the people I gripe about. I'm really happy to see so many women blogging about the Canadian election this fall.

Sassymonkey and Sassymonkey Reads.

I love getting feedback

I look at comments as feedback to my writing.

Blogeberties?  I'm not sure.  I've only been doing this for a short period of time.  I just signed on to Blogher.  I have had some comments.  I do get e-mails from friends and family about my blog and have a pretty good following of people who read on a daily basis but they aren't big on commenting.

Not big on commenting

My mom is like that actually - sometimes she comments, sometimes she emails me directly about something on my blog. I can't quite figure out what causes her to do either one.

I Welcome and am Thrilled by All comments

I would be especially thrilled if I could get my son to read my blog.  He just hasn't gotten around to it yet.

But, honestly, it's a thrill to know that the words I write have reached some one.  It's a way to connect with people.  When I've written a post I thought was especially witty or insightful and haven't gotten a comment - it makes me have a momentary pity-party but I keep a going.

It's interesting to check the stats and see what posts continue to draw traffic.  I also note posts that gets comments on my blog vs on blogher and vice versa.

Comments that make you smile.

I've never had anyone I could call a celebrity comment on one of my blogs, but I had a couple of interesting ones lately.

On MS Maze, I linked to a newspaper story about a woman in the UK with MS, who was having trouble receiving much needed benefits. Several days later, she left a comment to inform me that her situation had changed and she WOULD be getting her benefits after all. I was thrilled to hear from her and to know that she would be okay.

On Conversations Over Dinner, I just did a post about the wonderful customer service we received from Southwest Airlines. Wouldn't you know it? A Southwest flight attendent left a comment saying that she was glad we enjoyed our flights! She made my point perfectly.

It just makes you smile!

Ann Pietrangelo

Now that's a great comment!

Was the flight attendant one who was on your flight or just a random SW flight attendant?

I once posted about a restaurant that we didn't enjoy, on a message board that was not private but very well hidden, the owner found my comment and came and posted a reply. I was amused and grouchy all at the same time.
